And Still She Laughs by Kate Merrick

Defiant Joy in the Depths of Suffering

Now this is a heartfelt read of painful life ups and downs. There are laughs, there are tears, there are bodily fluids, and there is some surfing for good measure. There is the reality of family, and the deep pain of loss of a child and mourning. Each night a chapter of this book has been balm to the soul. Kate writes from the heart, with honesty and rawness, nothing is dressed up. She tells it like it is. But then she also brings us back to Christ. She pulls a part the lives of women of the bible who have suffered and explores their journey. With one chapter to go, I have cried, and laughed, and have looked beyond my own suffering. I have had my eyes drawn to Christ.

Living Out the Beauty of the Gospel Together

I have been delving into this book over the past few months. This book pulls apart Titus 2. So, it is an apt choice for the Sovereign Grace Sydney women's Titus 2 book club book. Here Nancy delves into the importance of the younger/older woman relationship and living life as a Christian woman.

I asked some of the women around me for their thoughts on the book (paraphrased by me)...
"It has a good solid theological basis and then follows that through to the practical."
"There is lots to digest, you can keep reading and revisiting and be able to take more out of it." (So true, I have read the first 9 chapters twice thus far!)
"As a single woman, I have felt very single at times in this book, with a large focus on marriage." (I agree, there does seem to be more of a marriage focus.)
"Reinforces the cross generational- encouraging to the older and younger." (And all of us that would be classified as both a younger and older woman!)
"Has helped you to be aware and intentional with relationships with other women, and to encourage you to invest in others."

What I have been loving most about this book is the conversations, the convictions and the cups of tea. I love that this can spur on discussions with friends, with my Life Group, and with the ladies in my Titus 2 Bookclub. It has been encouraging to get to know people I did not know well, and to be able to share life together, with the framework Nancy has written about.

Rising Strong by Brene Brown

If we are brave enough, often enough, we will fall. This is a book about getting back up.

This is the next Brene book in the Besties book club. So far we have covered The Gifts of Imperfection and loved it lots. We were super keen to delve into another one together.

Now, I have decided I want to be a storyteller researcher like Brene. If someone had told me that such a thing existed years ago I may have considered entering the research field earlier. I love the concept. It combines peoples stories and makes meaning from them. I feel I want to now this with every aspect of my life...with the MECFS/chronic illness life as I meet and engage with so many beautiful people struggling with this disease. Then I could do it with my professional interests in the teaching and child welfare domain. And then again with my Christian walk, church and chronic illness....anyway, stay tuned for where this takes me. In the mean time, I thought I would ask the Bestie aka Emma to share why we are reading Brene...so she had a bit more clarity than me and shared her thoughts.

"Ok so we are reading Brene because her research and her ideas resonate with every woman, no matter where she is in her journey. Her books are easy to read, logical, and for a non-emotional type like me, she makes it easy to self reflect and to get a deeper understanding of why I am the way I am.
She gives permission for us to let go of what society says we should be and the courage to let discover more fully who God created us to be...feeling empowered and encouraged that we are more than enough if we have the courage to be real."
I feel she sums this up nicely. Two chapters in, and I am wanting to read this book all day...at the expense of my uni work. Whoops!

You can catch more of Brene at Brene Brown.

So thankful for brain improvements that mean I can read a chapter before bed, on top of doing some uni during the day. Well, most days anyway!
